In lieu of a traditional post this week, I have put together a list of some interesting articles about recent scientific news across a variety of different subjects, from astrogeophysics to neuroscience. If there are other topics you’d like to see more of, leave me a comment below!

What a look at more than 3,000 kinds of cells in the human brain tells us (Science News) – Current research on the brain and the many, many cell types in this important organ have elucidated new roles and functions. A map of the brain may not be too far out in the future!

Mars has a surprise layer of molten rock inside (Nature) – A 2021 meteorite that crashed into Mars has redefined what scientists had believed to be the structure of the planet’s core, suggesting a smaller liquid core than was previously thought. Read more about this interesting finding here!

Cancer cells reprogram to metastatic state through the acquisition of platelet mitochondria (Cell Reports) – A recently published research report describes a fascinating oncological finding: cancer cells can uptake mitochondria from platelet cells in culture, a consequence of which is improved metastatic ability of the malignant cells. Although this paper is definitely more technical than the others listed, it is worth a read if you are interested in learning more about oncology and research on potential new anti-tumor therapeutics!

Menopause may be widespread among mammals, challenging famed hypothesis (Science) – Menopause, previously thought to occur primarily in humans and some whale species, seems to be more common than previously thought. Chimpanzees may be another member of the family of menopausal mammals, along with other potential new additions to this list!
