An important part of becoming successful in science research is finding opportunities where you will learn the basics of research and where your success will be fostered, often in the form of internships!

To find a good internship in your desired field, you should start by thinking hard about what topics you’d like to learn about and what experiences you would like to have. If you are unsure, that’s okay! Do some research on your own first to see what subjects you might be interested in, and reach out to professors or other professionals that are in that field or a similar one; I have found that 99% of the time, these folks will be happy to chat with you and give you some advice.

A key piece of the “finding an internship” puzzle is having a solid, focused resume. A resume can be general, describing your experiences that aren’t necessarily related to one field, or more focused, aiming to help you obtain a position in a specific field. Although the experiences you already have to put on your resume are obviously important, half the battle is figuring out how to write about these experiences in an effective way, where you can demonstrate the reasoning for each experience and what you learned from it.
